Oil Changes

An oil change replaces used engine oil and typically the oil filter. It is one of the most common scheduled maintenance items across nearly every vehicle.

Engine oil lubricates moving parts, helps manage heat, and picks up small particles that would otherwise wear down internal components. Over time and use, oil breaks down and loses some of its ability to do this effectively.

The interval for this service is not universal. It depends on the engine design, oil type specified by the manufacturer, and how the vehicle is driven. A manufacturer may also define separate intervals for normal use and special driving conditions such as towing or frequent short trips.

Because of this variation, MaintenanceSpec does not publish a single oil change interval that applies to all vehicles. The applicable interval for your vehicle is shown on its specific maintenance schedule once that schedule has been sourced and published.

This page explains the service in general terms. It does not state a mileage or time interval, because the correct interval depends on your vehicle's manufacturer, model, year and configuration.
