Most maintenance schedules include a battery test or inspection rather than a scheduled replacement date. Replacement is decided by the test result, not by reaching a distance figure.
Battery life is driven by heat, charge cycles and standing time rather than by distance covered. A vehicle in a hot climate, one used for short trips that never fully recharge the battery, and one parked for long stretches all age the battery differently. A published replacement distance would be wrong for most owners.
A test measures state of charge and the battery ability to deliver current under load. Terminals are examined for corrosion, the hold-down is checked, and the charging output from the vehicle is confirmed. A weak result before winter is a common reason for replacement, because cold raises the current needed to start the engine.
Vehicles with automatic engine stop-start place heavier demand on the 12-volt battery, and many use a type specified for that duty which has to be matched on replacement. Hybrids and electric vehicles still carry a 12-volt battery for the vehicle systems.
