The cabin air filter cleans air entering the passenger compartment through the heating and air conditioning system. It has no role in engine operation, and it is listed separately from the engine air filter.
Reduced airflow from the vents at a given fan setting, fogging that clears slowly, or a stale smell when the blower starts are the usual signs. These appear gradually, which is why the item sits on a schedule rather than waiting for a complaint.
Manufacturers set the point from the filter media, the blower system and the expected operating environment for that model. Not every vehicle is fitted with one, and where it exists, the documentation states where it sits and how it is reached.
Pollen load, traffic density, unpaved roads and parking under trees all shorten useful filter life. A vehicle covering low distance in heavy urban traffic can load its filter faster than one covering high distance on open roads, which is why some schedules carry a time limit next to the distance figure.
