The engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the air the engine draws in. Its replacement point is listed in the manufacturer schedule, and many schedules shorten it for vehicles used in dusty conditions.
All intake air passes through this filter before it reaches the cylinders. A clogged element restricts flow, which the engine management system has to work around. Filter size and media differ between engines, which is one reason the replacement point is not shared across models.
Some schedules list the filter as an inspection first and a replacement later, so a technician looks at the element at one checkpoint and fits a new one at another. Others list replacement only. The schedule for the vehicle states which pattern applies.

The engine air filter and the cabin air filter are separate parts with separate intervals. One feeds the engine, the other cleans air entering the passenger compartment, and replacing one does not cover the other.
