The Pilot tracks engine oil life and driving pattern and reports Maintenance Due Soon at 15 percent oil life, then Maintenance Due when it reaches zero. Code A calls for engine oil replacement only. Code B calls for engine oil and oil filter plus an inspection list: front and rear brakes, tie rod ends, steering gearbox and boots, suspension, driveshaft boots, brake hoses and lines, fluid levels, the exhaust system and fuel lines and connections.
Sub items are numbered and appear alongside the main code. Sub item 1 is tire rotation. Sub item 2 covers the air cleaner element, the dust and pollen filter and a drive belt inspection. Sub item 3 is transmission fluid and, where fitted, transfer fluid. Sub item 4 is spark plugs plus timing belt and water pump inspection. Sub item 5 is engine coolant. Honda gives no fixed mileage figure for Pilot oil changes. The Maintenance Minder sets the point, and the only stated backstop is time based: if no Maintenance Minder message appears more than 12 months after the display was reset, Honda states the engine oil should be changed every year. Four footnotes add fixed figures on top of the code system. The air cleaner element is replaced every 15,000 miles in dusty conditions regardless of the Minder. The dust and pollen filter is replaced every 15,000 miles in areas with high soot. Timing belt and water pump inspection moves to every 60,000 miles for vehicles driven regularly above 110F, below -20F or used for trailer towing. Rear differential fluid is replaced at 7,500 miles and then every 15,000 miles for mountainous use or trailer towing. Brake fluid carries a 36 month backstop if sub item 7 has not appeared.
